Unforgettable trip!

Norway

Our trips to Norway focus on the sparsely-populated island of Arnoya (107 square miles with about 300 permanent residents), north of the Lyngen peninsula and well above the Arctic Circle. Utilizing a van and ferries, we can ski a huge number of zones on the island or hop to nearby islands. All these locations have some things in common – amazing open ski terrain that ranges from mellow to steep, spectacular views, and the ability to ski all the way to the ocean. We typically travel to Norway in April to take advantage of longer days, more stable weather, and spring ski conditions.

Our lodging on the island of Arnoya is at Singla, a 500-acre property owned and managed by our good friends, Joe Talbert and Hannah Viano. They purchased one of the only structures in the northern Norwegian islands to have survived the Nazi invasion, and it is a property rich in Norwegian history. The island of Arnoya is the site of one of Norway’s largest Sami reindeer migrations, and the Singla homestead has been a central piece of the island’s history since it was first homesteaded in the mid-1800s. Singla provides simple and cozy lodging with meals included. Although it is a home with power, running water, and road access, the experience is more similar to that of a backcountry hut, albeit one with a distinctly Norwegian vibe! There are small double-occupancy bedrooms with lovely views of the sea and the surrounding islands, and of course, there is a sauna

The weather and skiing in Norway is defined by variability. The maritime weather can be calm and sunny or stormy in any month of the year, and we’ve skied everything from boot-top pow to bullet-proof frozen snow to perfect corn. Come ski Norway with North Cascades Mountain Guides and bring your sense of adventure and a desire to explore one of Europe’s most unique and beautiful ski destinations.

A NOTE ABOUT EQUIPMENT LISTS: Nothing can ruin a trip faster than having the wrong gear for the conditions at hand.  All our programs are subject to rapid and severe changes in the weather.  Select garments that are warm, lightweight and durable.  Generally speaking, the best arrangement is to think in terms of layers – a system that dries quickly, allow flexibility and resists wind, water and abrasion. All of us have different tolerances for heat or cold; for example, you might choose warmer gloves than specified here if you tend to get cold hands. If you have doubts about a specific garment’s appropriateness, please talk to your guide in advance about conditions you are most likely to experience. This list is built for a trip with an unsettled weather forecast.  With a good weather forecast some of these items may be left behind to save weight.
